Muslim Moors of Mauritania
If you went to last August’s Moor Music Festival in the UK, you heard contemporary European music. To hear real Moorish music, you would need to go south of Europe to Mauritania! There you will hear flamenco style music with a Muslim flavor. Flamenco style? Yes, because the Berbers, Arabs and Moors of North Africa once controlled Spain, and there was much cultural exchange during those 700 years. Moors today are found in Mauritania, the Niger River area of Mali, and Senegal in western and northwestern Africa. There are Black Moors and White Moors. The former are slaves; the latter are warriors and religious leaders in origin, if not in actuality today. Due to the Arab conquest, Moors are Malikite Muslims. Because they were converted by Sufis, a mystical Muslim sect, their form of Islam is very mystical. The Joshua Project asks us to pray for people to go to Mali to share the gospel with the Moors. Pray for boldness in witness by the few followers of Jesus who are already there. Ask the Holy Spirit to soften Moorish hearts and raise up intercessors. Pray that God will establish strong congregations among the Moors. One could also pray that the gospel of Jesus challenge Sufi mysticism as a catalyst for conversion to Christ.-TP |
